Feel good!

A focus on nature, versatility, combining usability with comfort, while at the same time providing warmth and cosiness – these are the trends that consumer trend experts predict will dominate home furnishings this year.

Interior design trends have been used for thousands of years as an aesthetic tool to find inner peace: think of the ancient Chinese art of feng shui, where spatial placement corresponds to energy flow, or wabi sabi, the Japanese practice of accepting imperfections, or ancient Rome’s penchant for using earth colours and geometric patterns to mimic the harmony of nature. A growing body of research proves that our home has a direct impact not only on our mood, but also on our overall health and well-being.  So is it any wonder that in 2022 – year 3 of the global pandemic – leading interior design trends will once again focus on making us feel good?

Slower, more sustainable living

So we’ve been forced to slow down and spend time in our homes – creating a strong desire to truly create a space that visually reflects how we want to feel. Increasingly we are paying attention to what appeals to our senses and how design can help us feel good.

And what exactly is it that appeals to our senses in 2022? We’ve found out what renowned interior designers have to say, and they have some ideas. Many predict the rise of browns and earth tones, which can be seen in materials such as leather or even terracotta walls and solid wood furniture. Others see the rise of nature-inspired finishes and shapes, while others say their clients can’t get enough of soft, curved furniture. In essence, anything that feels warm, welcoming and homely is in fashion. People want warmth, comfort and airiness.

And then there is the pandemic reality that our homes have become the main arena of our lives: where we work, sleep and socialise. Every corner and every object that surrounds us must serve a purpose. Functionality therefore takes on a new meaning in furniture design.

Meanwhile, some popular designs of recent years are disappearing. The days of all-white minimalism, for example, look over, which, while beautiful, offer little visual stimulation. The minimal look is becoming a little warmer. But zen is becoming trendy again.

And of course, most importantly, the sustainability of our furniture will be a central theme.
